There are three types of black ribbon all made from wax and resin; just wax, wax plus resin, just resin.

Wax smears easily. Wax plus resin is better. Resin is scratch proof, and can be printed on virtually anything; polyproplylene (plastic), metalised polyester.

If you are printing 100's or 1,000's of labels per month, then the price difference is very small, so you can use resin ribbons; which offer the best quality, most reliable printing.
